Mieux comprendre…

Les baleines ont une longévité comparable à la nôtre et une vie sociale complexe. Pour comprendre ces animaux, il est nécessaire de les suivre sur plus d’une génération. Pour percer leur mystère, il faut pénétrer leur univers, les suivre sous l’eau et étudier leur habitat. Pour relever ces défis, la recherche scientifique au GREMM allie approche à long terme et technologies de pointe. Notre vaste réseau de collaborateurs favorise une approche multidisciplinaire et nous permet d’offrir un encadrement aux étudiants à la maîtrise et au doctorat.

Programme de suivi en mer des bélugas du Saint-Laurent

Le suivi des individus photo-identifiés est la pierre angulaire de notre programme de recherche. Chaque été, depuis 1985, nous passons des centaines d’heures en mer avec les bélugas pour constituer des fiches d’observation des individus «connus». Nous étudions les liens entre l’organisation sociale des bélugas et leur utilisation des habitats. Nous cherchons à déterminer la façon dont cette organisation influence leur exposition aux menaces anthropiques pour identifier les facteurs qui limitent le rétablissement de leur population.

Par la combinaison des données génétiques et des fiches d’observation des individus photo-identifiés, nous étudions les caractéristiques biologiques fondamentales de la population de bélugas ainsi que l’incidence des caractéristiques génétiques sur la santé des individus, leur mortalité et leur succès de reproduction.

Le suivi en mer des bélugas est un des volets du Projet Béluga Saint-Laurent : un programme de recherche multidiciplinaire mené par un consortium de laboratoires de recherche privés et universitaires.

Programme de suivi en mer des grands rorquals de l’estuaire du Saint-Laurent

Année après année, notre équipe retrouve ces migrateurs au long cours qui fréquentent les eaux du parc marin en période estivale : photo-identification, biopsie, suivi d’individu ou de groupes et documentation des interactions avec les bateaux sont notre travail quotidien auprès des géants. Certaines années, des balises radios permettent de suivre les baleines sous l’eau. L’équipe du GREMMlin se consacre aux rorquals communs, rorquals bleus et rorquals à bosse, pour suivre les histoires individuelles au fil des ans, comprendre où ils s’alimentent et soutenir l’industrie d’observation et l’industrie maritime dans leur volonté de limiter leurs impacts sur ces animaux. Nous collaborons avec plusieurs équipes multi-disciplinaires dans le cadre de projets de recherche appliqués à la conservation.
